What we do:

Here is a list of Graduate Division offices and programs to help you find the services you need

Staff Directory:

Graduate Division deans and staff contact information.

Office of the Vice Chancellor and Deans, 1237 Murphy Hall

The Vice Chancellor of Graduate Studies/Graduate Dean oversees the Division and is an ex officio member of the Graduate Council. The Dean and the Associate Deans provide academic leadership for program development, planning, and decision making in the Graduate Division. The deans are available for assistance if students cannot solve problems within their departments.

Graduate Admissions / Student and Academic Affairs, 1255 Murphy Hall

Graduate Admissions/Student and Academic Affairs staff are responsible for monitoring student progress from admission to degree completion. At UCLA, graduate admissions is a highly decentralized process. Applicants submit an online application with basic information and the fee to this office. All other materials (statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, etc.) are submitted directly to the department, where the decision on the application is made by department faculty. Then the Graduate Division issues official decision letters and handles processes related to admit decisions (Statement of Intent to Register, non-immigrant visa application, etc.).

The staff also provides information about and processes petitions for exception to policies and deadlines, leave of absence, change of major, master's and doctoral committee nominations and advancement to candidacy, and a variety of other related academic petitions, forms and processes. Here students obtain final clearance to file the master's thesis or doctoral dissertation in the library.

Graduate Outreach, Diversity and Fellowships, 1252 Murphy Hall

Outreach and Diversity staff are responsible for programs that support individuals from cultural, racial, linguistic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds currently underrepresented in graduate education. The staff work with faculty, department personnel, and individual students on matters related to student support, retention, and degree progress. The office also coordinates summer research programs, institutional recruitment days, and workshops.

Fellowship staff -administer University-wide merit fellowships and extramurally funded fellowships. Students can visit this office to get advice from staff members, to consult fellowship directories, and to pick up handouts on graduate student funding.

Grant Proposal Advising

This program assists students in preparing extramural fellowship proposals. The service is available to UCLA graduate students, UCLA senior undergraduate students who intend to apply to graduate school, and UCLA postdoctoral scholars.

Graduate Student Support, 1228 Murphy Hall

Graduate Student Support staff process all merit-based fellowship awards for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, as well as fee remission benefits for Teaching Assistants, Readers, Tutors, and Graduate Student Researchers. Students can visit this office for questions regarding academic apprentice personnel requirements, benefits, fee remissions, fellowship contracts (Offer of Graduate Student Support), fellowship payments, and registration fees/ nonresident tuition.

Information Technology, 1247 Murphy Hall

Information Technology staff develop, maintain, and support all Graduate Division computer systems and functions, provide technical expertise for strategic planning, and work closely with other units on projects requiring data extraction and analysis.

Institutional Research and Information Services, 1252 Murphy Hall

Institutional Research and Information Services staff are responsible for providing the information necessary to examine issues affecting graduate education at the University (e.g., type and level of student funding, time to degree trends, enrollment planning, and diversity). They are also responsible for data preparation and transfer for graduate education research being conducted by UC Office of the President and regional or national agencies. Staff also respond to ad hoc requests for institutional data from the campus and assorted educational institutions or agencies.

The staff also are responsible for the coordination of all Graduate Division publications, such as the Graduate Quarterly, and for the development and maintenance of the Graduate Division web sites.

Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Services, 1228 Murphy Hall

The staff process Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar appointments and award payments, issue certificates, and verify required health insurance coverage of all appointments.
