Visiting Scholar Appointments
Visiting Scholars must be officially appointed in order to
receive a BruinCard to use library, recreational and other facilities on
campus. All appointment requests must be submitted to
Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Services, 1228 Murphy Hall, 144401.
Guidelines for New Appointments
If sponsoring an international scholar, the department is responsible for
requesting the appropriate visa through the
Dashew Center for International Students & Scholars.
The visa request should be the first step in facilitating a visiting scholar appointment, as it is
much more intensive and time-consuming.
The department nominates the eligible scholar to the Graduate Division for appointment
to the visiting scholar status by completing the Visiting Scholar Appointment Form.

the nominated scholar's sponsoring department or unit.
The department submits the official appointment request to Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar
Services, 1228 Murphy Hall, 144401. The request must include all of the following:
- Visiting Scholar Appointment Form
- Most recent resume/ Curriculum Vitae
- Brief objective statement
Graduate Division reviews the appointment and maintains a record of the scholar. Upon approval,
a welcome letter and a copy of the Appointment Form will be sent to the visiting scholar, while a
confirmation e-mail will be sent to the department contact as indicated on the Appointment Form. A
copy of the Appointment Form will also be sent to the BruinCard office for record-keeping purposes.
Appointment Considerations
- Incomplete forms or those that lack certification of the Ph.D. or proof
of holding a position comparable to UCLA faculty will be returned, thus slowing
the process.
- If the BruinCard Payment section in the Appointment Form is incomplete, the
BruinCard office will not issue a BruinCard to the visiting scholar.
- If a visiting scholar is beginning a new
appointment in a department/unit other than the one in which s/he was
originally enrolled, the previous appointment must be terminated using a
Visiting Scholar Appointment Form, and another form submitted for
the new appointment. Appointments cannot overlap.
Guidelines for Appointment Extensions
The department chair/unit director may request a renewal of the
appointment by completing a Visiting Scholar Appointment Form and
requesting an "extension." The dates of and reasons for the extension
should be included on the form.
